“Raphael Montañez Ortiz - A Contextual Retrospective” is the eight-decade retrospective dedicated to artist, educator, and founder of El Museo del Barrio, Raphael Montañez Ortiz. Starting on April 14th at El Museo, it is the largest exhibition-to-date dedicated to the artist, who is a central figure in U.S. Post-war art and a key figure in the Destruction Art movement.

Curated by Julieta González and El Museo’s chief curator, Rodrigo Moura, the exhibition spans narratives around identity, decolonization, and ethno-aesthetics throughout several decades of his production, from the 1950s to the early-2020s. It includes different media such as film, painting, photography, installations, documents, and assemblages.
